Milwaukee's Schleis, Youngstown State's Anderson named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes

Track and field athletes recognized for academic, athletic achievements

INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior Adam Schleis (men's track and field) and Youngstown State University senior Bethany Anderson (women's track and field) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Wednesday (May 21).

Schleis won the 110-meter hurdles at the Cardinal Twilight Saturday in Louisville, Ky. He ran a time of 14.42, which was just shy of his own school record of 14.40 he set last week.

As a history major, Schleis has a 3.36 grade-point average. He has been named to the Academic All-League Team three times, combining indoor and outdoor track, and was previously named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week in late February during the indoor season.

Anderson finished fifth in the hammer at the Cardinal Twilight on Saturday with a mark of 176-7. Her distance was just shy of the NCAA Mideast Regional automatic qualifying standard.

As a physical education major, Anderson maintains a 3.46 grade-point average. She is a five-time Academic All-Horizon League honoree and was Youngstown State's Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2006-07 academic year.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.

Brett Schaefer, UIC (baseball, junior, 3.33, business) guided UIC to a perfect 4-0 week by hitting .529 (9-for-17) with five extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs and nine runs-batted-in. He hit a game-tying RBI double with the Flames down to their final strike in the bottom of the ninth off Horizon League saves leader Jarad Miller and went on to score the game-winning run one batter later in UIC's 7-6 comeback win Saturday over Valparaiso that clinched the Flames' seventh straight regular-season League title. Schaefer, who hit his second grand slam of the season in UIC's 9-2 win over Purdue, was named this week's Horizon League Baseball Player of the Week.

Josh Page, Youngstown State (baseball, senior, 3.86, middle childhood education) helped lead Youngstown State to a 4-1 week on the diamond, including two victories over Milwaukee that clinched the third seed for the Penguins in this week's League Championship. He batted .348 with three runs scored and two runs-batted-in, and also stole his seventh base of the season. In addition, he was selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team last week and is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced later this month.
